Connect ChatGPT to UnderSelf

Standard MCP

In ChatGPT on the web, turn on Developer mode in Settings, create an app for a remote MCP server, paste https://api.underself.io/mcp and sign in to UnderSelf. This follows the flow OpenAI documents for any MCP server; we have not tested it end to end ourselves yet.

Not yet verified by us.ChatGPT's developer mode supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign in, the same open standard UnderSelf uses, so it should connect. We have not run it ourselves yet. If you try it, tell us how it went at info@underself.io.

Before you start

  • OpenAI offers developer mode on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts, on the web. If your plan does not show it, this path is not open to you yet.
  • On a Business, Enterprise or Education workspace, an admin may need to allow developer mode first.
  • OpenAI marks developer mode as elevated risk, because an app can take actions for you. UnderSelf's tools can only add dreams and readings to your journal and read them back; they cannot delete anything.

Connect ChatGPT

  1. Turn on developer mode

    In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. OpenAI moves this menu from time to time; if you cannot find it, search their help center for developer mode.

  2. Create an app for a remote MCP server

    Open the page where ChatGPT lists your apps and connectors, select + and create a new developer mode app. Name it UnderSelf and add a short description. The exact label changes between ChatGPT versions.

  3. Paste the UnderSelf URL

    Enter https://api.underself.io/mcp as the MCP server URL. If ChatGPT asks how to sign in, choose OAuth. You do not need to enter any keys.

  4. Sign in and approve

    ChatGPT opens the UnderSelf consent page. Sign in with Google or Apple, check what the app will be able to do, and tap Approve.

  5. Try it

    In a new chat, with the UnderSelf app available, say: "Log this dream: I was in a house with extra rooms."

If it does not connect

ChatGPT's menus change often. If your version offers a different way to add a custom MCP server, use it with the same URL: nothing on the UnderSelf side changes. Developers can check the full OAuth and error reference, and anyone can write to info@underself.io with what ChatGPT showed.

Open app.underself.io/account, go to Connected apps and tap Disconnect next to ChatGPT. Or remove the app in ChatGPT's settings. Its access stops within 15 minutes.
