What are Jungian archetypes?

Archetypes are the recurring figures Carl Jung believed shape the human psyche: patterns such as the Shadow, the Child or the Sage that turn up in dreams, in stories and in everyday choices. UnderSelf works with eight, drawn from Jung and the writers who came after him, and this page lists each one with a short description and a link wherever we have a full page.

Which one leads you?

The archetype test is seven situational questions and takes about two minutes. It shows which of the eight is leading you right now. It is a reflective tool, not a clinical test.

Archetypes in dreams

Jung treated dreams as one of the places archetypes show themselves most plainly. A figure that keeps returning in your dreams may be one of them; the dream meanings library reads the common symbols one by one. Start with the dream meanings library, or tell UnderSelf a dream and read what it says about you.
