Do Worries Make Your Dreams More Negative?

On October 11, 2026, PsyPost reported on a BMC Psychology study led by Vittorio Lenzo of the University of Catania. The team surveyed 389 Italian-speaking adults online. Each person answered one question on five features of their dreams: how often they remember them, how intense they are, whether the tone is positive or negative, whether they change the mood of the next day, and how often they tell them to someone. The same people filled in questionnaires on worry and on stress and related distress.

The researchers used a network analysis, which looks at how each measure connects to the others once the rest are held steady. A more negative dream tone was tied to more worry and lower mood. Dreams that colored the following day were tied to more anxiety. Remembering dreams often went with more intense dreams, and intense dreams went with dreams that carried into the day. Stress sat at the center of the whole picture. The authors read it through the continuity idea, that what occupies you awake may follow you into sleep, and conclude that "dream experiences are integrated components of a dynamic system of emotional functioning."

How far can that go? The survey caught one moment in time, so it cannot say whether worry shapes the dream, the dream feeds the worry, or both. The sample was a convenience sample, mostly young women recruited online, and everything was self-reported, with a single question for each dream feature. The authors also describe the dream connections as small. It is a pattern across hundreds of people, not a statement about what any one dream means.

That leaves your own record as the more useful test. Does the tone of your dreams track the weeks you were carrying the most, or does it wander on its own? You would only see it by writing a few mornings down.
