You open Claude, type "Log this dream: I was walking through my childhood house and found a room I had never seen," and a moment later you have the dream saved and a reading waiting, without leaving the chat. That's what connecting Claude to UnderSelf actually does, once you've approved it. Here's how the setup goes, what to type, and what Claude can and cannot see.
Adding an outside app to Claude went from a power-user trick to an ordinary thing this month. Potloc on September 15 and FinTech Studios on September 24 both shipped connectors for Claude inside the same two weeks. UnderSelf is not in Anthropic's directory; you add it yourself as a custom connector, and it is one we have run end to end. A connector, in plain terms, is a door from Claude into an app it does not own, here your dream journal, built on the open Model Context Protocol and opened only after you approve it.
How do you connect Claude to a dream journal?
In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, choose the plus sign, and Add custom connector. Paste `https://api.underself.io/mcp` as the server URL, save it, and choose Connect. Claude opens UnderSelf's consent page in your browser; sign in with the account that already holds your dream journal, and tap Approve. It takes about a minute.
What should you type to Claude to log a dream?
Nothing special. Four prompts work exactly as typed, once the connector is switched on for that chat:
- "Log this dream: I was walking through my childhood house and found a room I had never seen."
- "What did I dream recently?"
- "Search my dreams for water"
- "What patterns do you see in my dreams?"
The first one records the dream and, by default, asks for its reading in the same turn. The point of typing it the moment you're awake enough to remember is the same point behind any dream recall habit: the details go first, and speed matters more than the interface you say them into.
What does Claude see, and what stays private?
Two permissions cover the whole connection, and nothing else: read your dreams, readings and patterns, and record new dreams and request readings. Claude does not see your billing, your account settings, or anything you've stored in UnderSelf outside the journal itself. You can pull the permission from either side, your UnderSelf account page under Connected apps, or Claude's own connector settings, and access stops within fifteen minutes. One honest caveat: once a dream passes into a Claude chat, Claude's own retention rules apply to that conversation, the same as anything else you type there.
Can Claude find patterns across old dreams?
Yes. "What patterns do you see in my dreams?" calls one of six tools built for this connection: saving, getting one dream, listing recent ones, searching, requesting a fresh reading, and finding patterns. It answers from what you've actually recorded, not a general dictionary of symbols.
Most people who keep a dream journal lose it the same way: the notebook is one room over, or the app needs a password, and by the time either is open the dream has thinned to a feeling with no plot. If the thing you already talk to every morning could hold the thread instead, would you use it, or does a notebook by the bed still ask less of you at 6 a.m.?

Questions
Is connecting Claude to a dream journal actually verified, or just supported? Verified. I connected it myself, on the same Customize, then Connectors, then Add custom connector flow anyone else would use, and logged a dream that came back with a reading in the same turn.
